Unread post Mini simmons (first board)
Hi everyone who read this !
I am 34, French (sorry for my English), live in Casablanca (Morocco, Africa), know nothing about wood nor shaping, but after seeing all those wonderful woodboards on the net I wanted to give it a try.
I've been spending so much time on this forum, it helped me so much building my first board that I thought now I should share the result. Unfortunately as I wasn't sure at all of finishing this project, I didn't take so many pictures of the process.
Anyway I made a lot of mistakes, each of them took me a long time to fix, but I am quite happy with the result, even if the "experts" here may see some of the (many) imperfections.

I first wanted to make a longboard but finally decided to make a mini simmons as a first step. Moreover, shapers who have build this board on this forum seem to be very happy with it.

The glassing was made by Mark, a professionnal shaper here in Dar Bouazza (close to Casablanca), he made a wonderful work.
I haven't tried the board yet, but it should go in the water tomorrow 8)

The board has these caracteristics :
- Weight 6.3 kg
- Length : 174.5 cm
- Width : 48 cm
- Thickness : 5 cm
It is made of 6 mm Samba wood, with a 5 mm plywood frame.

I would like to say a big thanks to some of the fantastic shapers here, because there work was a great source of inspiration (I couldn't have built the board without that) :

Thank you very much for sharing your work.
I'll put some pictures of the board below.

Some picture of the building process
I made two big mistakes :
- I was unpatient and didn't build and glued the frame perfectly. the result is that the board had a little twist from tail to nose. Fortunately I was able to correct this by sanding into the wood after the top and bottom skins. Took me a lot of time. Not very professional but it worked...
- Second big mistake is that after the bottom skins was glued, the rocker of the board almost disappeared (the board became flat). That was probably because the plywood frame was not thick enough on the nose. Took me a considerable amount of time to undo the glueing, consolidate the frame, etc.

Hey Kullab,
I must have skipped over your post. Man, that is a great looking board for being a first timer. Looks like that was built in your kitchen? I love the way you improvised with the tools that you have. Hope to hear a ride report as I have just started a mini simm for myself. If you're like the rest of us, you are hooked and this will not be your last board.

Devin

Hi devin,
Thank you very much for your message !
It's been two years now since I finished the board, and due to personnal reasons I didn't surf much during that period and couldn't test the board in good surfing conditions. These two years I only surfed 3 or 4 times and the waves were either too small, or the weather was too windy, etc. At that time I liked the board and was happy that it worked (at least it didn't sink !), but wasn't thrilled by it.
Then these last weeks I started to go surfing again, and decided to give the board a try but this time in good conditions. I tryed it first in 3-4 feet waves, relatively small but perfect conditions (no wind, very good rock spot with fast wave, etc.) and I was amazed by the board ! It does what it is supposed to do : it is very easy to take the wave and to take off and then it goes very fast. It is almost like a longboard, but half the size, and very maneuverable. Then the week after I surfed it again at the same spot, this time 5 feet and also perfect conditions, and it worked like a charm again, which really surprised me because the waves were bigger, faster, and the take off not that easy and with the board being very flat I wasn't sure of the result.
The main default of the board is definetely it's weight (more than 6 kg), but I don't really feel it when in the water and I like the kind of surfing the board has.
So you are right, now that I have tested it in good conditions I really want to make another one !
It will probably be an egg or a longboard.
And you, how did it go with your mini simmons ?
Regards
