I got the bottom glassed yesterday and it turned out really well. I have some small bumps in the finish here and their, that are about the size of needle point, maybe air bubbles but not really sure. I did laminating coat, then fill coat to ensure mechanical bond. Then cut the lap tape off after it cured a bit and that really works well. It looks really good overall. Time to clean up the rail and flip the board to do prep and finish the deck. Once that's done I'm going to look at wet sanding the bottom to see if I can figure out the little bumps or air bubbles, then hot coat. They are really small, hard to describe, unless it's some dust in the air. Well see how it goes with the deck.

Looks fantastic.
Nothing better than a freshly glassed wooden board; makes the colors really pop.

Thank you Shain... Your right about the fresh glass, it's the first time glassing cedar and it really turned out nice. Getting ready to do the deck.

I got the deck taped off, and glassed with 4oz cloth, RR epoxy with a extra layer just forward of the vent to tip of the board. After doing the laminating coat and waiting till it tacked up a bit I did a fill coat. The epoxy went on well but towards the end of finishing up the rail it really started to kick off. I managed to get the rail wetted out and glass down to the wood along the rail. Then I mixed up a batch of resin for fill coat once the lam set but not completely dry to have a chemical bond for fill coat. I tried not to work the epoxy too much so that it would self level once the weave was filled using a spreader and 3" chip brush. As with the bottom once it started to dry I notice little bumps here and their, and few spots were the epoxy didn't level out very well or it needed more epoxy? I resisted mess with it too much once I got it smooth and epoxy on the deck and out over the rails. I let it sit over night and the next day I could see a few spots were epoxy soaked into the wood, and some spots that look like it could have used just a bit more epoxy. I sanded off the overlap of glass and now just letting it cure for a few days before doing anything else.

I suspect the little bumps are tiny air bubbles, just like the bottom. Here's some pictures of deck being glassed and some of the finished imperfections in the epoxy and glass that I'm trying to figure out how to correct and or smooth out. A couple of small spots look like the glass didn't get filled all the way. You see it more in the reflections off light coming in the window on to the board.

I'm still researching on doing a finish coat of epoxy and how smooth and or what grit to sand the board down to, to get a good mechanical bond. I did a little bit of sanding 220 grit on the bottom were their were these little bumps and it took the bump off and looks like an opened up a tiny air bubble in the fill coat.

I put the board in the back of my pickup truck that has a camper shell were it's nice and warm but out of direct sun to get a little extra heat for post cure and vent plug is open. I also wonder if I should put an extra layer of U/V protection, 2 part varnish, varnish, or clear coat automotive finish, on top of Resin Research epoxy? I know epoxy yellows over time as my hardener turned a little yellow as it's sat for quite some time before I got to the point of using it. For now I'm finishing up the center fin and looking into my next step to get it done to finished shine.

Not sure why some of the pictures came in upside down on my last post. Sorry about that. Here's a couple more of the board were the fill coat didn't quite smooth out and not sure what to do next. I'm doing a little research on mechanical bonding for epoxy and applying a finish coat of epoxy. I want to make sure I get a nice finish and sand it correctly.

The first two pictures are upside down, crazy... The first picture is a bit of weave and wavy epoxy, the second one is were it looks like a little valley line were epoxy soaked in a seam of the cedar. The third picture is little bumps and ripples in the epoxy. If that helps in figuring out a fix in doing a finish coat of epoxy.

Thanks, Peter
