Hi Guys

Firstly I must admit I have a problem

Ever since I got the idea to build a HWS and found this site, I have been become obsessed with this project. I spend an unhealthy amount of time browsing this site, reading everyone's builds, going through a multitude of design options in my head; chime rails, leash plus, rail strips, fins, etc etc. It has actually kept me awake at night. So I decided the sooner I start a build the better.

So I "eventually" decided to copy Mike Skinner's 7,6 magic carpet build, keeping it simple and low budget. http://www.instructables.com/id/Hollow- ... /?ALLSTEPS

I live in Cape Town South Africa. I only own a total of 3 small C clamps, but I do have a bandsaw :D

Ok thats it, I will post some pics shortly of what I have done so far.

Thanks
Brendon

Welcome.

You will need more clamps than that. Here's a way to make a bunch of simple clamp really cheap:
1) buy a couple of pieces on plastic plumbing pipe in a different diameters.
2) set your table saw to cut through only one pipe wall and rip a lengthwise slit down each pipe
3) chop each pipe into one inch sections
and voila! many small cheap clamps.

If you need stronger grip, put a larger clamp around a smaller clamp.

Thanks Groggy I am definitely going to use that idea, and also lots of cling wrap

So far I have bought 1 sheet of 4mm pine ply, 2,4m x 12m
Total spend : R169 (about $12)

Here's some few pics

Making some progress

I did a dry fit of the ribs and stringer and realised I had made a mistake with my rocker table

The ribs towards the front of the board have a bottom concave. I setup the rocker table using the stringer, but this concave was about 5mm in places, so I had to redo a lot of the rocker table setup. I spent a fair amount of time trying to get it perfect, not sure if I am being over pedantic now, but I have the rocker table nearly perfect now. Took about 4 hours in the end.

The 4mm ply seems very fragile and it isn't very straight, definitely need to use guide blocks for gluing to the base.

Shims for the concave. Remember to cut the notches in the ends of the ribs for your chine strip. I would also cut some extra blocks for the sides of the ribs to give you plenty of glue area to stick the top deck onto. Also use the outline template to shape the nose and tail inner pieces too then you'll be good to glue up to the bottom deck.
Good work!

I think Mike is referring to cutting some thin (maybe 1/4 inch x 1/4 inch) strips to run the length of the ribs which you glue to the sides of the ribs so the top edge (which gets glued to your deck) has a larger surface area.

Dos that make sense?
